All around the world, people know that the key to an unforgettable celebration is great music. Whether you live in Idaho or Italy, Texas or Timbuktu, music gets the party started and keeps it moving.  When planning a party, the importance of music to help set your overall tone and ambience can not be understated.  Whether your theme is Spanish tapas or French bistro, the key to real Mediterranean ambience is music and food, so your musical selections should be given careful consideration.  A musical selection featuring a mix of artists and genres is guaranteed to enliven any gathering.  Some general suggestions include:

• No radio.  Commercials and car advertisements are not the ideal atmosphere of celebrations- they are just irritating.

• Select and organize your music in advance either with a collection of CD's or through your iPod.  If you use CD's, be sure to mix up the selection- no one wants to sit through a solid hour of Barry Manilow! You will want to time your music so that you do not have to keep attending to it and searching through CD's once your guests arrive. 

• Decide if you will use only light background music or more interactive sing along music.  If you will need a special occasion song such as Happy Birthday, be sure to have it organized and ready in advance.  It's a good idea to anticipate changes in activity and have playlists ready.  Pool side music for adults may differ once the kids are asleep! 

• Keep the age and backgrounds of your guests in mind as well.  Older guests may have difficulty hearing conversations if there is too much ambient noise.  Make sure to place your speakers slightly away from the focal point of your party.  Nobody wants to have their cheese puff bounce off their plate from too much bass. 

• If you are having a particular theme to your food, coordinate your music as well to provide a more authentic atmosphere.
